Klaus Elle

Born in Leipzig in 1954, Klaus Elle took photographs as a young man. In 1976, he began studying photography at the Academy of Visual Arts. This was followed with a master‘s degree in experimental painting. At the same time, he worked as a freelance photographer, exhibiting in Dresden and Zurich, among other places, and in the famous Leipzig backyard gallery Eigen+Art. His drive to pursue exploratory knowledge by artistic means led to conflict with state power.

In 1988 he went to Hamburg. From there he supervised international exhibition projects, wrote and published books, together with like-minded people he founded consulting firms such as the Da Vinci Team, and worked with international companies. In addition to teaching at various art colleges in the fields of visual aesthetics and design, he was in-volved in developing concepts and scenarios for the education of students in the field of sustainability. His exhibitions and art projects have been shown worldwide.

Klaus Elle still sees himself as a seeker in a highly complex, unstable reality. For him, the photographic apparatus is a sensor in his explorations; art helps him navigate. When photographing, he does not want to show too many feelings, because otherwise the pictures would blur. Instead, he subsequently redoes the photographic surfaces, by drawing on them or scratching them, and thereby colors the technical reality constructs.

Depicting the invisible and interpreting the visible is how he describes his artistic goals. The series »Erleuchtungen« (Illuminations), which he describes as a personal journey into the cellars of forgotten memories, tells of this. What else should I do on this planet but search, he asks.
